DB Cargo’s Class 66 locomotive, the first in Britain retrofitted with the European Train Control System (ETCS), has commenced dynamic testing at Network Rail’s Rail Innovation and Development Centre. This marks a crucial step in equipping Britain’s freight locomotives with advanced digital signaling systems. The initiative aims to reduce road congestion by transferring cargo from trucks to rail, minimizing transportation emissions. As part of the East Coast Digital Programme, this retrofitting effort involves extensive collaboration within the sector, setting a foundation design for continuous retrofitting and expediting regulatory approvals for future locomotives. Following dynamic testing, the locomotive must complete 5,000 miles of fault-free operation before regulatory approval.
