Migrant Boat Disaster Off Djibouti Coast Kills 16, Leaves 28 Missing

A devastating boat disaster off the coast of Djibouti has claimed the lives of at least 16 migrants, with another 28 feared missing. This tragedy marks the latest in a series of deadly incidents along the Eastern Migration Route, a perilous path taken by African migrants seeking refuge or economic opportunities. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that the vessel was carrying approximately 77 migrants, including children. The IOM and local authorities are actively engaged in search and rescue operations. The incident comes on the heels of another tragedy just two weeks prior, where a boat carrying Ethiopian migrants sank off the same coast, resulting in dozens of fatalities. The Eastern Migration Route remains a dangerous and frequently deadly route for migrants fleeing conflict, natural disasters, or seeking a better future.
