Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre Lease Expires, City to Take Over Building and Repair Costs

After nearly 50 years, the Citadel Theatre’s lease with the City of Edmonton will expire in September. The city will assume responsibility for the building and its maintenance, which could cost tens of millions of dollars. The non-profit Citadel has been operating and maintaining the building since 1976 but has leased the land from the city. Under the original agreement, the city becomes responsible for the building once the lease expires at the end of September. While the Citadel would continue to handle daily operations, the city would be responsible for capital renewal, repair, and maintenance. The theater estimates it will need $375,000 for tools and other items and an additional $1.36 million each year for operating-funded repair and maintenance. Capital renewal costs over the next decade are estimated at $56.2 million and $131 million over the next 25 years. If no new lease is signed, the city estimates the building would cost around $800,000 per year to own. The proposal for a new lease will require approval from the city council, which could happen later in May, with the new lease being implemented in October.

Body Found in Rubble of Fire-Ravaged Edmonton Apartment, Suspect Faces Additional Charges

A tragic discovery was made more than 12 weeks after a fire destroyed an apartment building in Edmonton’s Old Strathcona area: a man’s body was found in the rubble, leading to manslaughter charges against a suspect already accused of arson. The cause of death has been determined to be smoke inhalation, and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide. The accused, 44-year-old Jason Murray Zabos, was initially charged with arson and other offenses and is now facing additional charges in connection with Olivares’ death.

Electric scooters and e-bikes are set to return to Edmonton streets, but the wait will be a bit longer than usual. The City of Edmonton is currently renegotiating contracts with scooter companies, and is making changes to the program to improve safety, accessibility, and parking compliance. The new contracts will be for three years, and will include incentives for companies to expand their riding zones and improve fleet management. The city is also removing the cap on the number of scooters and bikes that can be deployed, and will allow year-round operation as weather permits. In addition, the city will launch an educational campaign to remind users of proper riding etiquette and parking procedures.

Alberta Government Cuts Low-Income Transit Pass Funding, Despite Mayors’ Concerns

The government has defended its decision, saying that transit is a municipal responsibility and that it is investing in other programs to support low-income Albertans.

The hangar, located at the former City Centre Airport, was a municipal historic resource and had been under redevelopment as part of the Blatchford neighborhood. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it has been deemed suspicious.
