Alfa Romeo will cease its distinctive off-centre number plate designs on upcoming models due to a new European Union regulation prioritizing pedestrian safety. The brand’s signature side-mounted plates, a design element since the 1955 Giulietta Spider, will be replaced with centrally positioned plates on new vehicles, including the next-generation Giulia and Stelvio. Alfa Romeo’s design chief, Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, confirmed the change, citing the new homologation regulations for pedestrian safety as the driving force behind the decision.
