Colorado Tightens Funeral Home Oversight Following Gruesome Discoveries

Colorado Governor Jared Polis has signed two bills into law to overhaul state oversight of the funeral home industry following a series of disturbing incidents. These incidents included the discovery of 190 decomposing bodies in a facility, families being sent fake ashes, and the unauthorized sale of body parts. Previously, Colorado had some of the weakest funeral home regulations in the nation, but these new laws bring the state in line with most others. They require regulators to conduct routine inspections of funeral homes, give them more enforcement power, and implement licensing for funeral directors and other industry workers. The funeral home industry generally supports the changes, although some have expressed concerns about the strict requirements for funeral home directors.
