Counterfeit Samsung 1080 Pro PCIe Gen 5 SSDs have emerged on AliExpress, promising impossible performance at suspiciously low prices. Although some customer reviews claim authenticity, a thorough benchmark by Korean tech site Quasarzone reveals the devices’ true nature:
– Ridiculously low prices (under $29 USD for a 4TB SSD)
– Inconsistent performance specifications
– Use of a single 96-layer NAND chip (impossible for a 4TB drive)
– Realtek controller and PCIe Gen 3 support
Test results show abysmal performance, falling below 10% of a genuine Samsung 980 Pro. The fake drives slow down significantly once they reach 3% capacity, with 100GB file transfers taking over 1,800 seconds compared to just 33 seconds on a real 980 Pro.
While a genuine Samsung 990 Pro replacement has yet to be released, it is unlikely to perform as poorly as these counterfeit 1080 Pro drives.
