A rigorous 12-day boot camp called ‘Beat the Heat’ has tested the physical and mental abilities of 40 aspiring wildland firefighters in Whitehorse, Yukon. To join a unit crew with Yukon First Nations Wildfire, students must endure intensive training, including daily firehose training and grueling workouts. The program prioritizes local youth and experienced individuals, including those from diverse backgrounds and countries such as Ukraine, the Philippines, and New Zealand. Successful graduates will earn a Type 2 standard certification and the opportunity to apply their skills in wildfire mitigation efforts across Yukon and potentially beyond.
