The Battle of Hamel: The First Australian-American Attack in History

The Battle of Hamel, fought on July 4, 1918, marked the first joint offensive between Australian and American troops. Led by Australian Lieutenant General John Monash, the battle aimed to secure vital ground near the rail center of Amiens. Despite initial reluctance from the American supreme commander, General John “Black Jack” Pershing, the Australian-American forces achieved their objective within 93 minutes, with comparatively low casualties. The battle showcased meticulous planning, coordination, and the effective use of infantry, artillery, tanks, and aircraft, paving the way for future Allied successes.
