Samsung Loses Top Spot in Foldable Smartphone Market to Huawei

A shift has occurred within the foldable smartphone market, with Samsung relinquishing its position as the leading brand to Huawei. Data from Counterpoint Research reveals that Huawei has emerged as the new leader, capturing a 35% share of the market, while Samsung’s share has dwindled from 58% to 23%. Motorola has also made significant strides, experiencing a remarkable 1,473% growth in shipments and securing 11% of the market. Honor, formerly a Huawei subsidiary, has also risen to prominence, increasing its market share from 3% to 12%. This fierce competition in the foldable market has relegated brands such as OnePlus, Google, and others to the category of “Others.” Interestingly, the trend has shifted towards larger-screen foldable smartphones, surpassing the popularity of clamshell foldables for the first time since 2021. As Samsung prepares to unveil its Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, and Motorola anticipates the release of new Razr models, the foldable smartphone market is poised for further developments and intensified competition in the latter half of 2024.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 to Get a 296mAh Battery Boost

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is set to receive a significant battery upgrade, with a total capacity of 3,887mAh. This is an 8.3% increase over its predecessor, the Z Flip 5, which had a 3,591mAh battery. The increase in battery capacity could potentially translate to an extra hour of life depending on usage and the improved power efficiency of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. Despite the upgrade, the Z Flip 6 still lags behind other foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and OnePlus Open in terms of battery capacity. Samsung could likely fit a larger cell into the Flip 6 if it wanted to. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is expected to launch somewhat earlier than previous years, with a Galaxy Unpacked event likely to take place on July 10 in Paris.

Both devices are anticipated to have 6.9-inch main displays with the Razr Plus offering a higher refresh rate. OnePlus Open 2 and Oppo Find N5 Release Delayed to 2025

The highly anticipated OnePlus Open 2 and Oppo Find N5 foldable smartphones will reportedly not be released this year. According to industry sources, both devices have been pushed back to 2025 due to delays in the development of the necessary components. This news comes as a disappointment to fans of the original OnePlus Open, which was released in late 2022 to critical acclaim. However, the delay may allow OnePlus and Oppo to address some minor issues identified in the first generation model and could also mean a price reduction at launch.
