Wayne Rooney and Jamie Carragher were highly critical of Liverpool’s defending in the Merseyside derby on Monday, with Rooney slamming it as “school-boy” and Carragher calling it “awful”.
The criticism stemmed from Everton’s opening goal, scored by Jarrad Branthwaite in the 27th minute. The goal came from a set-piece, with Liverpool failing to clear their lines before Branthwaite poked the ball home.
Rooney pointed to Liverpool’s inability to defend set-pieces, saying: “We’ve seen this five or six times Everton have one the first contact in the penalty area. Liverpool will have known this is one of Everton’s biggest strengths. This goal the way they pulled defenders is school boy really.”
Carragher echoed Rooney’s views, saying: “Awful. How many times have Liverpool given free-kicks away? That is the name of the game for Everton. Konate, what is he doing? He doesn’t know where he is.
“The naivety of Liverpool in terms of how you play a derby game.”
