Glencoe Beach and Robert Everly Wildflower Sanctuary were revitalized on Earth Day, April 20, thanks to diligent volunteers who dedicated their time to cleaning up the area. The event commenced at 10 a.m., organized by the Glencoe Sustainability Task Force and the Friends of the Green Bay Trail. Despite the chilly temperature of 40 degrees, volunteers enthusiastically collected debris for two hours. Nate Van Allen, Glencoe Park District’s special events coordinator, reported that Glencoe Beach volunteers gathered 106 pounds of trash last year, while Everly volunteers collected 103 pounds. This year’s notable find was a 50-pound metal pole discovered at Glencoe Beach by Highland Park siblings Sean and Jack Collins. The event also featured educational activities, including beekeeping information from Erika Doroghazi and bird nest buffet tube assembling with Meridith Clement and Dorr St. Clair of the Friends of the Green Bay Trail.
