A massive accumulation of 30,000 metric tons of garbage at the Wagle Estate garbage transfer station in Thane has created an unbearable stench and raised concerns about health hazards for residents. The situation arose due to a snag at the Daighar waste disposal unit and the saturation of existing dumping grounds, leaving the corporation with nowhere to dispose of the waste. Local residents are demanding immediate action to clear the garbage and ensure clean air.

In a unique collaboration, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and Tangedco are joining forces to clean and remove garbage from around over 1,000 electrical transformers, pillars, and boxes across the city. This initiative aims to ensure safety for sanitation workers and residents during the upcoming monsoon season, as these locations pose a risk of electric shocks during cleaning.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will deploy All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) on beaches like Besant Nagar, Marina, and Loop Road to enforce garbage disposal regulations, prevent encroachments, and monitor beach cleanliness. This initiative follows the corporation’s recent crackdown on encroachments, including the removal of over 50 encroachments from Besant Nagar beach and 40 squatters from Pondy Bazaar roads.
H.E. Freddy Svane, Denmark’s diplomat to India, took to social media to express his disappointment over the garbage-filled service road between the Danish and Greek embassies in New Delhi. In a video posted on Twitter, Svane highlighted the deplorable state of the road, which he described as “great, green, and trashy.” He urged authorities to take immediate action to address the waste management issues plaguing the city.
The video sparked reactions from Indian netizens, who lamented the widespread waste management problems in Delhi. Several users pointed to the lack of proper waste disposal methods and the ineffective efforts of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). They suggested that a comprehensive initiative was urgently needed to tackle this pressing issue.
In a lighter vein, India’s Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, had previously expressed his distaste for Delhi’s garbage mounds and proposed constructing roads from recycled waste. The proposal, intended as a solution to reduce waste accumulation, had garnered attention and highlighted the need for innovative waste management strategies.
