General Gwyn Jenkins Becomes UK’s First Military National Security Adviser

Rishi Sunak has appointed General Gwyn Jenkins as the United Kingdom’s first national security adviser with a military background. Jenkins, currently the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, will replace Sir Tim Barrow, who is transitioning to become the UK’s ambassador to the United States. Jenkins brings decades of experience in the armed forces, including service in special forces and as a military advisor in No10. The Conservative Party defended the appointment of Sir Tim as the UK’s representative in Washington ahead of the general election, describing it as “entirely normal”.

Jenkins, who has an extensive military background, will succeed Sir Tim Barrow, who is set to become the UK’s next ambassador to the United States.
