Alberta Unveils Restructured Healthcare System with Four New Agencies

The Alberta government is introducing legislation to overhaul its healthcare system, dismantling the Alberta Health Services (AHS) and establishing four new provincial health agencies under the leadership of Health Minister Adriana LaGrange. The restructuring, estimated to cost $85 million over several years, aims to streamline operations, improve accountability, and support front-line workers. The new structure will see the creation of Recovery Alberta, led by Mental Health and Addiction Minister Dan Williams, responsible for mental health and addiction services. Acute care, primary care, and continuing care agencies are expected to be established in the fall, each headed by its own CEO. LaGrange will oversee the entire system and each of the three sectors.
