ASIRT Clears RCMP Officers in 2020 Fatal Shooting on Highway 2

Five RCMP officers were found to have acted reasonably when they shot and killed a 27-year-old man on Highway 2 near Leduc, Alberta, in May 2020. The man, who had previously fired at police officers and a civilian in Blackfalds, pointed a gun at an officer after his vehicle was stopped by a spike belt. The officers fired a total of 22 shots, seven of which struck the man. An autopsy determined that the man died from multiple gunshot wounds and had consumed cocaine, marijuana, and alcohol.

On Tuesday, a devastating collision on Highway 2 near Westlock, Alberta, tragically claimed the life of a five-year-old local girl. Three other individuals sustained severe injuries and were transported to the hospital via ambulance or STARS Air Ambulance. The Westlock RCMP has expressed its gratitude to the members of the community who rushed to aid the victims, providing CPR and traffic control until emergency personnel arrived. The investigation into the collision is ongoing, with the RCMP initially reporting that two vehicles collided head-on at approximately 8 p.m. north of Township Road 602. The RCMP expressed its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased child and encouraged the public to contact the Victim Services Unit or Westlock Community Victim Services Unit Association for support.

Southbound Lanes of Highway 2 Closed After Multi-Vehicle Collision and Fuel Spill Near Okotoks

The southbound lanes of Highway 2 near Okotoks are closed due to a multi-vehicle collision and fuel spill that occurred around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday. One person was airlifted to a hospital in Calgary by STARS Air Ambulance, while another person with non-life-threatening injuries was transported by ground ambulance. Traffic is being diverted onto 338 Avenue and the southbound lanes will remain closed until the spill is cleaned up. Fire crews are still on scene.
