Health Ministry Tackles Heatwave, Hospital Fire Prevention

Amidst the scorching heatwave in North India, the Union Health Ministry has taken stringent measures to prevent hospital fires during the summer months. States and Union Territories have been directed to implement fire safety protocols and heat-related action plans in all healthcare facilities. The Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast predicts above-normal temperatures during the heatwave, particularly in northwest and central India. To enhance fire safety awareness, states like Madhya Pradesh have conducted mock drills, while Odisha has set up heatwave control rooms. Uttar Pradesh has launched a ‘DASTAK’ campaign to educate the public, and Haryana has allocated funds for essential drugs and logistics. Rajasthan’s ambulances are equipped with cooling appliances, and West Bengal and Bihar’s fire departments are issuing safety certificates after verifying fire-prevention systems. The Delhi government has issued directives and SOPs for firefighting systems in hospitals. Last month, a fire incident in an East Delhi babycare center resulted in the tragic death of seven newborns. To ensure adequate safety measures, fire evacuation plans and firefighting systems have been made mandatory in smaller facilities without fire-objection certificates.
