India’s Second Phase of General Elections Underway, 160 Million Eligible Voters

The second phase of India’s general election commenced on Friday, with 160 million people eligible to cast their votes in this phase. The election, which began on April 19 and ends on June 1, will see voters electing 543 members of the Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing off against the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), which includes the Congress Party led by Rahul Gandhi. The focus of the second phase will be on the southern states of Karnataka and Kerala, where the BJP hopes to maintain its stronghold in Karnataka and Gandhi seeks re-election from Wayanad in Kerala.
