Appellate Court Reverses Ruling on Houston Drainage Fee

An appellate court has reversed a 2023 ruling in favor of the city of Houston regarding a voter-approved drainage fee. The plaintiffs argued that the city council had not allocated the drainage fund according to the city charter. The court agreed and ruled that the city had calculated the fee “legally incorrectly.” The ruling undoes a previous trial court judgment and stems from a lawsuit filed in 2019. The fee was intended for flood mitigation and drainage projects, but a 2018 report found that only a small portion of tax revenues were spent on those purposes.

Alaska Highway to Receive $42.6 Million Upgrade in Yukon

The Alaskan government has allocated $42.6 million for improvements to a 225-kilometer stretch of the Alaska Highway in Yukon, Canada. The Shakwak corridor, which runs between Destruction Bay and the Yukon/Alaska border, has been severely affected by thawing permafrost, resulting in road surface distortions, cracks, and potholes. The upgrades will include resurfacing, improved drainage, and potentially raising the road level in vulnerable sections to minimize the impact of thawing. Construction is expected to commence in 2025 and conclude in 2027.

California’s Electric Vehicle Boom Requires Massive Infrastructure Upgrades

A new study has found that more than two-thirds of electricity distribution circuits in California will require capacity upgrades by 2045 in order to meet the demands of electric vehicles (EVs). The study, published in Applied Energy, found that California must add 25 gigawatts to its capacity by that point — a shift that will cost between $6 billion and $20 billion. By modeling future distribution and capacity scenarios, the researchers determined that the first areas to experience overloads without an upgrade would be population-dense spots like the Bay Area.

Delayed San Clemente Beach Nourishment Project Resumes Amidst Funding Concerns

The long-awaited San Clemente Beach Nourishment project is set to resume this week after months of delays caused by equipment malfunctions and the search for a suitable sand source. The project aims to replenish the city’s dwindling beaches, providing a protective buffer against erosion and expanding recreational space. However, funding concerns persist as the city faces potential additional costs due to project delays and a longer distance to obtain sand. The project has been in the planning stages for over 20 years and is part of a larger effort to address chronic erosion along the Southern California coast.

Bridge Collapse in Telangana’s Peddapalli District, No Casualties Reported

A portion of an under-construction bridge in Telangana’s Peddapalli district collapsed on Monday night, luckily avoiding any casualties. The collapse occurred around 9.45 pm when two concrete girders out of five between two pillars, approximately 100 feet apart, gave way due to strong winds. The nearly one-kilometer bridge across the Manair River was inaugurated in 2016 and was intended to connect three towns, reducing the distance between them by 50 km. However, the work on the bridge was reportedly halted within a year or two due to payment disputes between the contractor and the government. Despite being incomplete, villagers had been using a mud road under the bridge for the past five years. The cost of the project has escalated over the years, and an additional Rs 11 crore was added to the estimated cost last year, even though less than 60% of the work has been completed.
