Google Doodle Commemorates Israel’s Independence Day

On Tuesday, Google Doodle celebrated Israel’s Independence Day, also known as Yom Ha’atzmaut. The holiday annually falls on the 5th of Iyar in the Hebrew calendar, although it may be adjusted to avoid the Sabbath. Traditionally, celebrations in Israel begin at sunset, especially in Jerusalem, where government officials give speeches and a ceremony involving the lighting of 12 torches symbolizing the 12 tribes of Israel is held. The blue and white Israeli flag, featured in the day’s Doodle, is hoisted high and waved throughout the country.
