Around 200 farmers from Tamil Nadu gathered at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Tuesday to demonstrate against the central government’s handling of crop prices and the interlinking of rivers. The protesters carried skulls and bones belonging to farmers who had allegedly committed suicide due to financial distress. They demanded that the promised doubling of agricultural income be implemented and that the government address their concerns. The farmers threatened to contest the Lok Sabha elections against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi if their demands were not met. However, they emphasized that their protest was non-political and aimed solely at seeking government assistance.
