The Supreme Court continues to hear a suo motu plea on the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College. The hearing, which began on August 20, saw the West Bengal government request the court to halt live proceedings due to threats against lawyers. Meanwhile, junior doctors remain on protest, expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of action on safety measures. The Supreme Court, however, assured protection for all involved and has established a National Task Force to improve safety for healthcare professionals.
Amidst ongoing protests by junior doctors in Kolkata over the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital, a TMC leader has accused Left and Ultra-left youth organisations of plotting an attack on the protesting doctors. The TMC leader, Kunal Ghosh, claimed the alleged conspiracy aims to defame the West Bengal government and has urged the police to prevent ‘outsiders’ from entering the protest site. Subsequently, the Kolkata Police arrested a CPI(M) leader and another individual based on Ghosh’s claims.
