FAA to Review SpaceX’s Starship Launch Plans at Kennedy Space Center

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced an environmental review of SpaceX’s plans to launch the Starship from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The review is necessary as SpaceX has made changes to its plans since NASA’s previous assessment five years ago, including an increased launch frequency and a more powerful rocket design. The Starship, with its colossal thrust of 17 million pounds at launch, has a greater potential to impact the local environment than any other vehicle launched from Florida’s Space Coast. The FAA’s review will assess the potential effects of Starship launches on wildlife, air quality, and noise levels.

Boeing Starliner’s First Crewed Launch Rescheduled for May 17

NASA has announced a new target date for the first crewed flight of Boeing Space’s Starliner spacecraft, targeting no earlier than 6:16 p.m. ET on May 17 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch was initially scheduled for May 9 but was scrubbed due to an issue with a valve on the upper stage of ULA’s Atlas V rocket. Teams have since rolled the Starliner and Atlas V rocket to an integration facility to replace the faulty valve, and astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have returned to quarantine. The mission aims to confirm the operability of the Starliner’s onboard systems for future crewed flights to the International Space Station.

NASA scrubs launch of Starliner spacecraft due to technical issue

NASA engineers have called off Monday’s launch of the Starliner spacecraft due to a technical issue with an oxygen relief valve on Centaur, the second stage of the Atlas V rocket. The decision to scrub the launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida came just two hours before the scheduled liftoff time of 10:34 p.m. ET. NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams had already been strapped into their seats inside the Starliner spacecraft at the time of the decision. The scrub is a big disappointment for the crew and launch team, but once the issue has been resolved, a new date for liftoff should be able to be arranged without too much delay.
