Kerala’s Unique Electoral Behavior: From Communism to Competitive Politics

Kerala’s electoral history has been marked by unique patterns and trends. From the first non-Congress government in 1957 to the alternating rule of Left Democratic Front (LDF) and Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), the state has shown a high degree of political competitiveness. Despite the emergence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kerala remains a predominantly secular stronghold, with a preference for alternating between the UDF and LDF in assembly elections. However, in Lok Sabha polls, the UDF has had a consistent advantage. This unique voting behavior reflects the pragmatic and ideology-driven nature of Malayali voters, who have favored secular alliances and kept the BJP at bay.
