Korean Air in Talks to Purchase Boeing 777X Aircraft

Korean Air is reportedly in discussions with Boeing to purchase at least ten Boeing 777X aircraft. If the order is confirmed, it would be the third deal for the 777X this year and marks a shift for Korean Air, which has recently favored Airbus aircraft. The airline’s current fleet includes Airbus A380s and Boeing 747-8s, some of which are aging and due for replacement. The 777X is advertised with a capacity of up to 426 passengers in a typical two-class configuration, filling a gap in Korean Air’s fleet.

Korean Air in Talks to Acquire Boeing 777X Jetliners

Industry sources report that Korean Air is currently engaged in negotiations with Boeing for the potential purchase of at least 10 Boeing 777X jetliners, marking a possible shift back towards its long-standing partnership with the US-based manufacturer. Korean Air has traditionally relied on Boeing for its fleet, but recently placed a significant order with Airbus, its European competitor. Discussions regarding the acquisition of the 777X, an advanced version of the 777 mini-jumbo currently in service with Korean Air, are ongoing between the two companies. However, a third industry source suggests that Korean Air remains in continuous discussions with Boeing on potential orders but has no immediate concrete plans to finalize an agreement for new 777s. Korean Air has not yet released an official statement, while Boeing declined to comment, directing fleet-related inquiries to the airline.

WestJet and Korean Air Expand Codeshare Partnership for Enhanced Connectivity

Amidst the post-pandemic recovery, codeshare agreements are gaining popularity as airlines seek to expand their networks without large fleet investments. WestJet recently announced an expanded codeshare partnership with Korean Air, providing more transpacific destinations and seamless connections for passengers. This partnership includes the launch of a new seasonal Calgary-Seoul route, enabling Korean Air passengers to access Canadian destinations via Calgary. WestJet customers can connect to Korean Air flights to various Asian cities from Seoul, while Korean Air passengers gain access to WestJet’s extensive network in Canada from major hubs like Vancouver and Toronto.
