Typhoon Shanshan, a powerful storm equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane, is threatening Japan’s southern island of Kyushu with heavy rain and strong winds. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued its highest emergency alert for Kagoshima prefecture, warning of potential flooding and disruptions to transportation and power. The storm has already caused widespread power outages and prompted major companies like Toyota to halt operations, while airlines and railways have canceled flights and adjusted services.

Two Powerful Earthquakes Strike Off Japan’s Kyushu Island

Two strong earthquakes, measuring 6.9 and 7.1 magnitude, struck off Japan’s southern island of Kyushu on Thursday, prompting a tsunami advisory. The earthquakes, centred off the eastern coast of Kyushu, caused minor damage including broken windows at the Miyazaki airport. Japan, situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is highly susceptible to seismic activity.
