The Congress party has accused the Narendra Modi-led government of waiving off bank loans worth ₹16 lakh crore for its ‘crony capitalist friends’ while neglecting farmers’ loan burdens. General Secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized the Modi government for failing to provide relief to farmers, despite the UPA government’s ₹72,000 crore agricultural loan waiver in 2008. The Congress has pledged to establish a permanent farm loan waiver commission if it comes to power. Ramesh also highlighted the government’s unfulfilled promises to farmers’ organizations, including the implementation of a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP).

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the Prime Minister of waiving off loans worth Rs 16 lakh crore of his billionaire friends. Gandhi claims that this money could have been used to improve the lives of Indians by providing jobs, reducing farmer suicides, and making education free for marginalized communities. He charges that this money was instead spent on creating hype for individuals like the Adanis.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has reiterated his promise to waive farmer loans up to Rs 2 lakh by August 15. He made the announcement while addressing a meeting in his Kodangal assembly constituency, stating that even if former CM K Chandrasekhar Rao were to “die by hanging in his farm house,” he would fulfill his commitment. Reddy’s comments came as Rao, the chief of Bharat Rashtra Samithi, is set to begin his Lok Sabha campaign. Rao has been touring drought-hit districts, promising farmers that they were better off under his leadership when there was no water shortage. Reddy’s loan waiver promise was first made two days ago in Bhongir. BRS leader T Harish Rao, the nephew of Rao, had challenged Reddy to resign if he failed to deliver on his promise. Reddy responded by asking if KCR would disband his party if he kept his word.
