A recent study published in ‘The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health’ examines the relationship between achievement goals and depression in adolescents. The study found that mastery goals, which focus on developing understanding and skills, are associated with a reduced risk of depression, while performance goals, which focus on outperforming peers, are associated with an increased risk. These findings suggest that interventions that promote mastery-approach goals may be effective in preventing depression among adolescents.
