British directors Ken Loach and Mike Leigh have resigned as patrons of London’s Phoenix Cinema in protest of the venue hosting the Israeli international Seret film festival. The festival, which has links to the Israeli government, has been criticized by pro-Palestine solidarity groups and staff at the cinema. Picturehouse and Curzon cinema chains had already canceled all Seret screenings over safety concerns. Pro-Israel and pro-Palestine protesters clashed outside the cinema ahead of the screening, which featured a film about a Hamas-led terrorist attack.
