Hurriyat Leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Kashmir Elections: ‘Boycott is a Democratic Means to Express Anger’

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the Hurriyat chairperson and Kashmir’s chief cleric, spoke to The Hindu about the recent Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, outlining the Hurriyat’s position on the polls. He emphasized that while the Hurriyat believes elections cannot replace the resolution of the Kashmir issue, they recognize the democratic right to participate. Farooq also criticized the recent changes in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape, arguing that the elections are meaningless under the current circumstances and that the Hurriyat’s continued existence reflects the enduring sentiment of the people.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Reasserts Commitment to Peaceful Resolution of Kashmir Issue

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chief cleric of Kashmir and chairman of the separatist group Hurriyat, has reiterated his commitment to fighting for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue. He has also decided to refrain from issuing a boycott call ahead of the upcoming elections in Srinagar, unlike in the past. Farooq believes that the unilateral changes made by the Indian government in 2019, such as the split of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, have further complicated the issue and disenfranchised the people of the region. He said that the people of Kashmir have enough political maturity and wisdom to know what to do in the current situation.
