Mojave Max Emerges from Burrow, Spring Contest Winner Yet to Be Announced

Mojave Max, the desert tortoise mascot for Clark County Desert Conservation Program, has emerged from his burrow, marking the start of spring. This annual event attracts over 4,000 guesses from Clark County School District students, with the winner receiving a field trip and pizza party. The contest also educates students about the importance of desert tortoises and the delicate ecosystem they inhabit.

Tortoise Mascots Emerge from Brumation, but Mojave Max Remains Missing

NV Energy’s mascot Wattson has emerged from his burrow, while Clark County’s Mojave Max is still missing in action. Desert tortoises hibernate for several months during the year and typically emerge between March and May. Wattson’s emergence on Wednesday was unusually late, possibly due to sunlight exposure in his habitat. Mojave Max, the focus of an emergence contest, has yet to leave his burrow as of Tuesday. If he doesn’t emerge by Wednesday, April 24, he will break his record for latest emergence in the contest’s history.
