The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into several regions of India. The Monsoon has reached parts of the central Arabian Sea, south Maharashtra, Telangana, south Chhattisgarh, south Odisha, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Favorable conditions are expected to allow for further progress into remaining areas of central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, and Telangana over the next few days. Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has issued weather alerts for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Pune. North Interior Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, Kerala, and Mahe are also likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days. This year’s Monsoon onset is two days earlier than usual. On Wednesday morning, the first pre-monsoon showers arrived in parts of Mumbai, providing some relief from the oppressive heat and humidity. Dadar, Kandivali, Magathane, Oshiwara, Wadala, and Ghatkopar received rainfall ranging from 4 mm to 26 mm between 7 am and 8 am. Light rain was also reported in central and south Mumbai. Skymet had earlier predicted that the monsoon would advance over the Konkan region and make a timely onset in Mumbai, with pre-monsoon showers of light to moderate intensity expected over the next 3-4 days. Despite the rain, road traffic and train services were operating normally. The Mumbai monsoon season typically begins in the second week of June. In May, the city experienced unseasonal rain accompanied by strong winds, causing the collapse of a hoarding in Ghatkopar and resulting in fatalities.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is expected in West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala, and Karnataka. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted the onset of monsoon in Karnataka’s capital, Bengaluru, by June 14. The monsoon is expected to arrive 15 days earlier than last year, bringing with it ample rainfall for the state. The southwest monsoon is currently advancing over Tamil Nadu, West-central Bay of Bengal, and Sikkim, and will soon enter Andhra Pradesh. Rainfall is anticipated to commence in Karnataka during the first week of June, providing relief from the dry weather conditions experienced in April.

This year’s monsoon is expected to be evenly distributed across the state, with particularly intense rainfall expected in Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. South Interior Karnataka has experienced a 23% surplus in rainfall since May 1, while North Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka have witnessed surpluses of 19% and 24%, respectively.

The onset of the southwest monsoon in India occurred two days earlier than its normal date of June 1. The monsoon reached Kerala two days ahead of schedule and advanced over northeast India six days earlier than usual.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts favorable conditions for further monsoon advancement, but a senior official warns of a potential delay in monsoon entry over south Maharashtra and northwest India. While some rainfall activity is expected in peninsular India, it may be subdued due to the weakening of the Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon. Additionally, the monsoon is likely to reach Madhya Pradesh by June 15, two days earlier than its usual onset.
