Mosquito-Borne Diseases: Prevention Tips for Travelers

Mosquitoes are the primary vectors for transmitting malaria, dengue, and chikungunya in tropical and subtropical regions. Travelers visiting such areas should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and the subsequent risk of these diseases. In the United States, approximately 2,000 malaria cases are reported annually, mainly among individuals returning from international travel. Malaria symptoms typically manifest within seven to 30 days after exposure, but in rare cases, they can emerge up to a year later. Preventive measures include utilizing insect repellents, wearing long sleeves and pants, and closing windows with screens. Sunscreen application and regular bathing are also recommended. EPA-registered insect repellents are safe for use, including during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Instructions for repellent usage should be followed diligently to ensure proper application. Additionally, permethrin, an insecticide, can be employed to kill or repel insects, providing long-lasting protection. Permethrin should be used strictly according to manufacturer guidelines, avoiding direct skin contact. Other preventive measures include staying in air-conditioned or screened rooms, using mosquito netting while sleeping outdoors, and eliminating standing water around homes to minimize mosquito breeding grounds.
