In connection with the Mahadev betting app scam, actor and fitness coach Sahil Khan was apprehended by the Mumbai police cyber cell’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh on April 27. The scam is estimated to have reached approximately 15,000 crore, and the SIT is currently investigating potential illegal transactions between certain financial and real estate firms and the app’s backers. Investigations are ongoing regarding Khan and 31 others, with their bank accounts, electronic devices, and other belongings being examined. Furthermore, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) / Economic Offence Wing (EOW) in Chhattisgarh has apprehended two individuals connected to the alleged illicit operations of the online gaming and betting app. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also detained nine individuals as part of its separate investigation.

A 58-year-old retired employee of Torrent Power, Shrenik Vaishnav, fell victim to an elaborate scam where cybercriminals impersonating Mumbai police and former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik defrauded him of Rs 41 lakh. The scammers posed as ‘Pradip Sawant of Mumbai police cybercrime cell’ and fabricated accusations of money laundering, threatening to arrest Vaishnav if he did not cooperate. They instructed him to transfer all his money into a bank account for ‘verification’ and forced him to sell his shares and deposit the proceeds into another account. The scam came to light after Vaishnav paid the hefty sum and the scammers disconnected all communication, prompting him to file a complaint with the cybercrime helpline. The cybercrime police have registered a complaint under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including extortion, breach of trust, and impersonation of a public servant.
A traffic constable in Mumbai’s Nalasopara (East) suffered a lost tooth and other injuries after being allegedly slapped by a man inside the Tulinj police station. The incident occurred on Monday when the constable, Praveen Ranade, objected to the man, Shailesh Waghela, recording a video of him while on duty. Police have booked Waghela for assault and other charges. The motive behind his actions remains unclear.
