Doordarshan’s logo has undergone significant changes since its inception, evolving from a color-agnostic ‘DD Eye’ to the current saffron-hued version. The initial logo, designed by Devashis Bhattacharyya, was selected by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the early 1970s. In the early 1980s, the logo gained color, adopting an orange or saffron hue against a dark green background, perhaps inspired by the colors of the Indian flag. The iconic Doordarshan tune, composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Ahmed Hussain Khan, was first aired in 1976 and has become synonymous with the broadcaster. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the logo underwent refinements, led by students from the National Institute of Design, and was animated by RL Mistry. Notably, the tagline ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ was later removed from the logo.
