In the neighborhoods of Bharathi Nagar and Perumalpuram, a group of women from Palavanatham village have found an unexpected source of income: neem flowers. Every morning, they gather these fragrant blossoms that carpet the streets, earning a substantial amount of money. The women, who travel by train to their workplace, collect around 20-30 kg of neem flowers daily, which they sell for ₹20 per kg. The buyer uses these flowers for various purposes, including aromatherapy and hair and skincare products.
