Officer Luis Huesca, a Chicago police officer for six years, was returning home early Sunday after a shift when he was fatally shot. Huesca is the third Chicago police officer to be shot this year, and the first fatally. His family is entitled to survivor’s death benefits following the designation of his death as in the line of duty.

Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca, 30, was fatally shot outside his home in Gage Park early Sunday morning. During the attack, his gun and car were stolen. Huesca’s death comes just two days before his 31st birthday and in the same area where his colleague, Officer Andrews Vasquez-Lasso, was killed in the line of duty last year. No suspects are in custody at this time.
The Chicago Police Department is circulating photographs of a person of interest in the weekend slaying of Officer Luis Huesca, who was shot to death in the Gage Park neighborhood. The individual is seen wearing different clothing in two photos that appear to have been taken from private security cameras. The alert notes that he “should be considered armed and dangerous,” but acknowledges that detectives have “no probable cause to arrest at this time.”
