The Lincoln Project, a political action committee known for its anti-Trump advertisements, has disclosed that it lost tens of thousands of dollars to online hackers. According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records, the group reported two fraudulent transactions totaling $35,000 in February. Lincoln Project spokesperson Greg Minchak attributed the incident to a vendor’s hacked email account, which resulted in the issuance of authentic-looking invoices. The hack affected multiple clients of the vendor, including the Lincoln Project. Minchak emphasized that the fraudulent transactions did not impact the organization’s operations. The group’s compliance firm took immediate steps to mitigate the problem, including notifying the bank’s fraud department and implementing new procedures for invoice and payment confirmation. The Lincoln Project has faced other challenges in recent years, including calls for its dissolution following harassment allegations against co-founder John Weaver.
