Brazilian Woman Paralyzed After Rare Bacteria Infection in Colorado

Claudia de Albuquerque Celada, a 23-year-old Brazilian exchange student in Aspen, Colorado, has been hospitalized and left paralyzed after contracting botulism, a rare bacterial infection. Diagnosed two weeks after the onset of symptoms, Celada is currently receiving breathing assistance at Swedish Medical Center in Denver. With mounting hospital bills and travel insurance coverage expiring, her family has raised $200,000 for an air ambulance transport to Brazil, where they believe recovery will be more efficient. The source of the infection remains unknown, but Celada’s family suspects it was foodborne. The case is said to be isolated, and there is no risk to the public.

Performer Sues Cirque du Soleil After Paralysis in ‘O’ Show

A performer has filed a lawsuit against Cirque du Soleil following a 2023 incident in which he was paralyzed during the ‘O’ show. The performer, Kyle Mitrione, dove into a moving platform during the new ‘Island’ act and fractured his neck and spine, resulting in complete quadriplegia. The lawsuit alleges that the act lacked adequate synchronization between music cues and performers, leading to the platform being in Mitrione’s path when he dove. Cirque du Soleil has declined to comment on the matter, but the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined the company for failing to provide proper safety measures during the show.
