Chicago Police Union to File Appeal Over Disciplinary Cases Arbitration

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 has filed a formal notice to appeal a court order limiting officers’ access to independent arbitration in serious disciplinary cases. The City of Chicago had previously voted to reject a ruling allowing officers to bypass the Police Board for arbitration, arguing it would compromise transparency. However, the union maintains that officers have the right to arbitration under state law and will challenge the order in court. While officers have been able to use arbitration for lower-stakes disciplinary cases for over a decade, this appeal focuses on major disciplinary actions such as dismissals or long-term suspensions.
