Manipur Crisis: Congress Demands President’s Intervention Amidst Mounting Violence and PM Modi’s Absence

CEC Presents Newly Elected Lok Sabha Members to President

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar, accompanied by Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, presented President Droupadi Murmu with the names of newly elected Lok Sabha members at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won the majority in the elections, while Narendra Modi is set to take oath as the head of the coalition government for a third term. The meeting is part of the process for the formation of the 18th Lok Sabha, and the newly elected members are expected to meet on June 7 to formally elect Mr. Modi as their leader.

Prime Minister Modi Resigns, BJP-Led NDA Secures Third Term

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers tendered their resignations to President Droupadi Murmu, who accepted the resignations and asked the government to continue until a new one is formed. The Cabinet also recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 240 seats in the recent elections, down from 303 in 2019, while the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 293 seats, crossing the halfway mark for a third term. The opposition alliance led by the Indian National Congress won 233 seats. Despite the NDA’s victory, its reduced majority in Parliament may delay further reforms.

President Murmu Confers Padma Awards to Prominent Individuals

On April 22, 2024, President Droupadi Murmu bestowed the prestigious Padma Awards upon several notable individuals. The awards are categorized into three tiers: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. These honors recognize exceptional contributions in various fields and are regarded as among the highest civilian distinctions in India. The President approved 132 Padma awards for 2024, including five Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan, and 110 Padma Shri awards.
