UK Government Implements Emergency Measures to Tackle Prison Overcrowding Amidst Recent Riots

The UK government has implemented emergency measures to address prison overcrowding caused by increased sentencing following recent riots. Operation Early Dawn, previously used in May, sees defendants in northern England held in police cells until prison space becomes available. This comes as the government tackles “violent thuggery” and more than 1,000 people have been arrested for riot-related offenses. While the government seeks to maintain public safety, concerns about the impact of these measures on the justice system persist.

Over 9,600 Children Wrongly Incarcerated in Adult Prisons in India: Study

A study by iProbono, a legal justice non-profit, has revealed that as many as 9,681 children were ‘wrongly’ incarcerated in adult prisons across India between January 2016 and December 2021. The report, titled “Incarceration of Children In Prisons in India,” highlights the ineffective implementation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which mandates the placement of children in juvenile homes rather than adult prisons.
