MOHAP Announces Regulations and Procedures for Abortions in the UAE

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has released new guidelines for abortions in the country. According to the regulations, all abortion requests must be approved by a committee consisting of an obstetrician-gynecologist, a psychiatrist, and a public prosecutor. The procedure must also be performed in a licensed healthcare facility by a licensed specialist obstetrician-gynecologist. Abortions are only permissible within 120 days of pregnancy and in cases where the pregnant woman’s life is in danger, there are severe fetal abnormalities, or there are no other alternatives to save the woman’s life. Healthcare facilities are required to provide detailed information about the procedure, including the risks and benefits, and to respect the woman’s right to privacy and confidentiality.
