Puerto Rico Democratic Primary: Biden Faces Minimal Opposition on the Ballot

On Sunday, Puerto Rico will hold its Democratic presidential primary, the only opportunity for registered voters to cast their ballots in the race for the White House. Despite President Joe Biden having secured the nomination, he faces minimal opposition on the ballot. Originally scheduled for March 17, the primary was moved to save costs. The Republican primary was scrapped, and delegates were awarded to former President Trump in a caucus-style vote. While Puerto Rico residents cannot vote for president in November, their influence can potentially affect Electoral College calculations, as seen in the 2020 election when both Biden and Trump campaigned in Puerto Rico to influence voters on the mainland. According to a Pew Research Center analysis, about 5.8 million Puerto Ricans live in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, with a significant presence in Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, all battleground states. The primary will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET, with results expected by 5 p.m. ET.
