BJP’s Rajasthan Chief Faces Tough Challenge in Opium Farming Hotbed

Rajasthan BJP chief C P Joshi faces a formidable contest in the Chittorgarh Lok Sabha seat due to discontent among the Rajput community and opium farmers. The district, which accounts for 90% of opium production in India, has witnessed protests over low government prices. Despite Joshi’s efforts to appease farmers and rope in community leaders, Congress candidate Udai Lal Anajana has raised the issue aggressively. Joshi seeks to leverage Modi government schemes and the BJP’s victory in six assembly segments under the Chittorgarh seat in the 2023 Assembly polls.

Defense Minister Visits Troubled ‘Army Factory’ Amid Rajput Community Discontent

In an attempt to quell unrest among the Kshatriya community, BJP has dispatched Defense Minister Rajnath Singh to Bisahada village, renowned as the ‘army factory’ of North India. Rajput voters have expressed dissatisfaction with the party over historical distortions and other issues, leading to trepidation within the BJP headquarters. Singh, seeking support for Gautam Budh Nagar candidate Mahesh Sharma, appealed to the community to prioritize the greater national cause and vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He highlighted the party’s accomplishments, including the abrogation of Article 370, the construction of the Ram Mandir, and the abolition of triple talaq. Additionally, Singh praised Modi’s efforts to facilitate the evacuation of Indians during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Despite Singh’s efforts, resentment persists within the Rajput community due to a controversial remark by Union Minister Parsottam Rupala, as well as concerns about candidate selection and the perceived marginalization of the community. Rajput leaders have held a Mahapanchayat to express their grievances, and the BJP now faces the challenge of appeasing a significant voting bloc in western Uttar Pradesh.
