After a 42-day strike protesting the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, junior doctors have announced they will resume their duties today. The strike, which began in June, had paralyzed medical services at the hospital and sparked widespread outrage.
The West Bengal Medical Council has cancelled the medical registration of former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh, who is currently in CBI custody for his alleged involvement in the Kolkata rape-murder case. The decision follows a show-cause notice issued to Ghosh and a request from the West Bengal chapter of the Indian Medical Association.
TMC MLA Arundhati Maitra, known as Lovely Maitra, sparked outrage after calling doctors protesting the Kolkata rape-murder case ‘butchers’ for impacting healthcare for the poor. Her comments have drawn criticism from the BJP and legal action, with the TMC requesting she refrain from such statements in the future.
Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has accused the former principal, Professor Dr. Sandip Ghosh, of corruption and mafia-like behavior. Ali alleges that Ghosh failed students, took commissions on tenders, and looted money from the institution. He also claims that Ghosh provided alcohol to students and enjoyed significant power.
