Five RCMP officers were found to have acted reasonably when they shot and killed a 27-year-old man on Highway 2 near Leduc, Alberta, in May 2020. The man, who had previously fired at police officers and a civilian in Blackfalds, pointed a gun at an officer after his vehicle was stopped by a spike belt. The officers fired a total of 22 shots, seven of which struck the man. An autopsy determined that the man died from multiple gunshot wounds and had consumed cocaine, marijuana, and alcohol.

Three Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers in British Columbia will not face charges in the 2021 death of Jared Lowndes, a 38-year-old Indigenous man. The B.C. Prosecution Service informed Lowndes’ mother, Laura Holland, of their decision on Tuesday. Lowndes was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Tim Hortons in Campbell River, B.C., by at least one officer on July 8, 2021. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. found reasonable grounds to charge the officers but the B.C. Prosecution Service declined to proceed with charges. Holland vowed to continue her fight for accountability, saying, “My fight to hold police accountable for my son’s death won’t stop today.”
A 32-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a suspicious death that occurred on the Ochapowace First Nation in southern Saskatchewan over the weekend. Police were called to assist EMS at a home on the First Nation early Saturday morning, where they found a man, later identified as 32-year-old Elias Still, deceased.
Two former employees of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a Montreal-based United Nations agency, have been charged with conspiring to illegally sell Chinese drones and other military equipment to Libya in violation of international sanctions. Fathi Ben Ahmed Mhaouek, 61, and Mahmud Mohamed Elsuwaye Sayeh, 37, have been charged under the United Nations Act and Regulations relating to the implementation of United Nations resolutions and special economic measures on Libya. Mhaouek was arrested and is scheduled to appear in Quebec Court in Montreal, while Sayeh is still wanted and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. The RCMP alleges that the two men used foreign front companies to circumvent existing international sanctions to facilitate their illegal activities, which included facilitating purchases of Libyan oil between prohibited entities and the People’s Republic of China.
A 70-year-old man has tragically passed away after a kayaking accident in Deep Cove. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when a two-person kayak capsized, leaving its occupants stranded in the water. Despite efforts to bring them ashore, one of the individuals succumbed to the incident. The authorities have not yet released the deceased’s identity but have confirmed the cause of death remains unknown. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
