South Yorkshire’s Ambitious Plan: Could Bus Franchising Revolutionize Public Transport?

South Yorkshire is on the verge of a public transport revolution. A recent consultation proposes a shift from privately-run bus services to a franchised system, where the local authority would control routes, fares, and timetables. This move aims to improve reliability, affordability, and accessibility for passengers, but faces significant challenges and will require a major financial commitment. The outcome of this consultation could have far-reaching implications for the region’s economy and mobility, and may even set a precedent for other parts of the UK struggling with similar public transport issues.

SBB Exercises Contract Option for 33 Additional FLIRT Multiple Units

SBB has exercised a contract option for 33 additional FLIRT multiple units as part of a framework agreement with Stadler. The new units will operate across borders between Switzerland and France, providing faster direct connections between northwestern Switzerland and Alsace. The vehicles are equipped with dual integrated traction power and train protection systems, allowing operation in both countries. They are also optimized for capacity, with more space for bicycles, strollers, and large luggage items. The FLIRT trains are also accessible for passengers with reduced mobility, with two dedicated wheelchair spaces and a wheelchair-accessible toilet on each train.
