The Supreme Court of India has dismissed a plea filed by the Gujarat government seeking a review of its January 8 verdict in the Bilkis Bano case. The verdict had facilitated the re-imprisonment of 11 convicts, and the Gujarat government had argued that the court had made certain observations against the state. The Supreme Court, however, found no merit in the review petition and dismissed it.
The Supreme Court has deferred the consideration of review petitions on the same-sex marriage verdict after Justice Sanjiv Khanna recused himself due to personal difficulties. The Chief Justice of India will now reconstitute the bench to hear the case. The review petitions challenge the court’s decision from October 2023, which denied legal recognition to same-sex marriage.
