For many individuals, housing is one of their most significant monthly expenses. Sharing residential costs with a roommate can significantly impact savings. However, apartment rental rates fluctuate throughout the United States, making it crucial to determine the potential savings from opting for a two-bedroom apartment with a roommate compared to renting a one-bedroom unit independently. To provide insights, SmartAsset conducted a comprehensive study of median apartment rents in 100 of the largest cities nationwide, ranking them based on the potential financial savings from sharing a two-bedroom apartment. The analysis involved comparing the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment to half the median rent for a two-bedroom apartment in each city, assuming equal rent payment by each roommate.
