Food recalls in 2023 hit an eight-year high, with undisclosed allergens and listeria contamination accounting for the majority of cases. There were 313 food recalls and alerts announced, resulting in six deaths and over 1,100 illnesses. Undisclosed allergens were the primary reason for recalls, driven by the addition of sesame as a mandatory disclosed allergen. Other common reasons included listeria, salmonella, and uninspected products.
